MISTAKE 4 – MAKE MONEY BY BLOGGING

All you need is to set up a free blogging website using WordPress or Blogger, and start posting entertaining blogs and you are set to make a comfortable living.

Creating a blog site and working hours on beautifying it with plugins and widgets is not the only work it requires. Bloggers have to come up with quality posts regularly to make it happen. In order to make a comfortable living, or to actually make money from your blog you need to work on your revenue scheme. Most of the bloggers make money through renting out advertisement space, affiliate marketing and selling products through e-commerce websites. Generating income from these modes need a lot of work.

What needs to be done?

Bloggers should provide room for programs to take advantage of their blog visitors. There any many Pay-per-click (PPC) programs that can be integrated with your blog site. Posting sponsored content on blogs is another revenue mode.

Affiliate marketing is a secure deal, bloggers should work with both company’s affiliate programs and individuals. Another way to monetize your blog is to offer some services like webinars, consultancy, ebooks, in-person presentations etc.

MISTAKE 5 – NOT BUILDING EMAIL SUBSCRIBERS

Social media networking sites are the rulers. It is important to have more Facebook page likes and twitter followers than to ask for email subscribers and maintaining the list. Social Media is the place to connect with audience and promote blog posts.

Indeed Social media networking sites are great in connecting and communicating with large group of people. They are the go to place to make initial connection with people who do not know about your blog. But understand, these social media networking sites are somebody else land. Sooner or later you may have to pay the price for using them. Your blog site and email subscribers are your own assets.

Email allow bloggers to connect with readers on personal level. Emails are not lost in their inbox as Facebook posts in their timelines. Email lists consist of people who are interested in your blogs and have voluntarily opted for to hear from you. (don’t feel guilty of forcing them by pop ups)

Build your email subscriber’s list by offering them some premium products of services. You can offer them some discounts or access to more valuable blogs that are not available to other people.

Place your subscription widget at a very prominent place on your blog. Go for popups, slide-ins to bring attention (they work!!) Offer an appealing and lucrative call-to-action for people to subscribe.

MISTAKE 6– WRITING ONLY SHORT OR LONG POSTS

Some go with the school of thought that short posts are liked by readers, some believe writing detailed long posts offer more value to the readers.

Variety is required. Some certain blogs posts require detailed information where as some blogs posts should be short, crisp and gripping. According to most of the SEO tools 300 words for a blog would do justice to blog posts, writing just few sentences with bunch of photographs or a 10 page article will not result in anything worth putting in effort in.

What needs to be done?

Write short as well as long posts. Indulge readers with your blogs and ask feedback. For long articles, format and present them in easily readable way, like using bullet points, headlines, sections headings or quotation. Images make them more readable. Please note presentation is the key.

MISTAKE 7– IT IS ALL ABOUT NUMBER OF WORDS

Myth

Only thing matters is the length of the blog measured by number of words it has. Blogs are identified by the 300 word, 450 word, 650 word, 1000 word, 1500 + word categories.

People don’t stay on your blog page for a long if it is difficult to read no matter how many words your have written. What a blog is saying is important but how it looks is equally important.

What needs to be done?

Pay attention to how you present your content, formatting is critical. You can use different size headlines and break paragraphs with section headings or bullet points.

Keep white spaces, not only they add air to your content, they also make it 20% more readable. Include pictures, graphics (Infographics are really hot this moment) Illustrations make your blog post more attractive and 80% more memorable.
